If you’re one of those who deny celebrating this day as Women’s day well done because this day is dedicated to Women’s Rights. If you are still indifferent to celebrate this day, as a way of honoring the achievements of women who fought and paved the way for gender parity, then, lend me your ears and I may give you a reason for that.
A few months ago, I randomly watched a Zoom presentation, namely “Women, Language and the Media: Understanding the Issues and Taking Action to Create a Gender Equal Narrative” by Lisa Moore. One of the first points she made was the connection between everyday language and its dynamic influence on the way we think. She explained that our thoughts and set of beliefs are articulated and mirrored not only in the words we use but also in the way we use them.
Due to the dynamic relationship between thought and language, one can alter his/her thoughts through the things he/she listens to. This becomes even more impactful on the topics we don’t have a strong opinion on because there’s no counter-information to filter the information. Speaking about women’s role in society, the majority of the population already has a pre-set schema. The reason for that is because, throughout the years, the way society has constructed the role of women was in comparison to the men’s role. In other words, society’s normalcy is based on men’s needs; hence, women are more of or less of in comparison to men. Everyone is guilty and contributed to this, even science.
Let me illustrate what I mean. Kohlberg’s theory of moral development was based on the empirical study of boys; yet, his theory is also used as a framework to behaviorally analyze girls, who inevitably have different needs. Additionally, according to Freud, women are deprived by nature “because they’re controlled by their emotions,” implying that because men tend to express their emotions less frequently and more discretely suggests strength. Therefore, the reverse is true.
Another historical event that unwinds the way we have colored the Western gender schema and more specifically women’s role in society is the Mesoamerica women in pre-Columbian history. Based on anthropologists, people at that time had egalitarian gender roles, their work patterns were complementary according to their strengths and needs and everyone’s role was equally important since their contribution led to their survival. Even sexual activity was associated with pleasure for both sexes. After colonization, Western perspectives of women were imposed on Indigenous women. Specifically, Latin American women were expected to sacrifice themselves for everybody else, socialized to get married and have children. This concept of marianismo stems from the role model of the Virgin Mary.
If you’re one of those who refuse to take responsibility for this or believe that my examples are obsolete, then you may be right. Currently, what we do is perpetuate the gender schema, which has been established throughout history, because there was no reason to question these social constructs. Dr. Jackson Katz, successfully fleshes out how the power of language entrenches this illusion of gender equality. He pointed out that when you turn your TV on and land on the news channel, what would most likely hear is how many women were raped. Not how many men raped women. Consequentially, all the attention is fallen on women. Hence, the media covertly ignore who’s responsible for this action, leaving you with the only information that women are labeled as “raped.”
Unfortunately, it does not stop here. For all of you, who don’t consider themselves as sexists because you recognize the gender gap, but assume that there’s equal opportunity for all genders and believe that it’s up to each woman to find her self-confidence and fight this, let me explain to you how self-stigma works. By creating a culture of having women portrayed as “more sensitive”, “crazy”, “weak,” “to be cared for”, built on many strata throughout centuries, we have created a public view of women’s role in society. Women who are born and raised within this culture and society, easily internalize these views since they are considered as “normal” and they behave reciprocally to their given role. As a result, women tend to alter or invalidate their experience to fit this role, without questioning how their role was constructed because it was established as normal. Therefore, if you take a passive stance on this social issue, just know that at the same time you are also subscribing to it.
Recent statistics of the European Commission’s 2018 Report on “Equality between women and men in the EU”, showed that 9 out of 10 Europeans believe that it’s important to promote gender equality and nonviolence to ensure a fair and democratic society; yet there’s not much change in mind-sets and solidarity. This demonstrates our intention and willingness to change, however, this is not enough. Having a good intention is definitely needed, but it’s one step, not the goal. Therefore, celebrating and being aware of Women’s Rights day is a way to educate yourself about the women’s role in this society.
Όπως είχα αναφέρει σε προηγούμενο μου άρθρο, “What is it like to be a Cypriot Woman?“, μια γυναίκα δεν αντιπροσωπεύεται μόνο από το φύλο της αλλά και από το ρόλο της σαν μια γυναίκα μιας συγκεκριμένης κουλτούρας. Έχοντας υπόψη ότι, μέσα από την κυπριακή ιστορία, η κοινωνία υπέστη καταπίεση, συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της θέση της Κύπριας γυναίκας, η ανάγκη για αλλαγή δεν είναι εύκολα ορατή. Γι’ αυτό το λόγο, δεν μπορούσα να γράψω άρθρο και να μην αναφερθώ τα “Θκυό Λόγια“. Εντυπωσιακή είναι η ιστορία για το πώς ξεκίνησαν και ακόμα πιο εντυπωσιακή η δουλειά που έχουν κάνει μέχρι στιγμής. Όπως και εσείς θα αντιληφθείτε, διαβάζοντας τα πιο κάτω, η προσφορά τους είναι εξαιρετικής σημασίας. Εάν δεν κατανοήσουμε συλλογικά πως σαν κοινωνία τείνουμε να συμβάλλουμε καθημερινά σε μικρές και/ή μεγάλες πράξεις που αποτελούν την υφιστάμενη κατάσταση, τότε δε θα έχουμε την επιλογή για αλλαγή.
Το Θκυό Λόγια είναι η πρώτη καμπάνια στην Κύπρο που εξηγά με απλά, Θκυό λόγια το πώς οι ανισότητες που αφορούν τα φύλα μας επηρεάζουν καθημερινά. Ξεκινήσαμε ως μια digital καμπάνια που τρέχει σε Instagram & Facebook (Θκυό Λογια / Thkio Logia). Τώρα σχεδιάζουμε το πρώτο μας βιβλίο. Το περιεχόμενο της καμπάνιας τώρα θα είναι και σε μορφή βιβλίου!
To Θκυό Λόγια ξεκίνησε λλιο πολλά σαν μια αγανάκτηση: “Εν πάει άλλο, πρέπει όλος ο κόσμος να μάθει παραπάνω για τούτα τα θέματα.”
“Τούτα τα θέματα”. Θέματα που έμοιαζαν ξένα για πολλά χρόνια, θέματα που νομίζαμε πως ξεπεράσαμε, θέματα που νομίζαμε πως αν είμαι άντρας δεν με επηρεάζουν. Τα θέματα αυτά λοιπόν, οι ανισότητες των φύλων, στερεότυπα, προκαταλήψεις, διακρίσεις και σεξισμός ήταν κάτι που ακόμη και εμείς, σαν ιδρύτριες του Θκυο Λόγια αργήσαμε πάρα πολλά να μάθουμε και να κατανοήσουμε.
Το Θκυό Λόγια λέει με απλά λόγια πώς φαινόμενα σαν αυτά τα αντιμετωπίζουμε σχεδόν καθημερινά και πώς πολλά φαινόμενα όπως κουλτούρα βιασμού, γυναικοκτονίες, bullying ΛΟΑΤKΙ ατόμων κ.α εξηγούνται. Αλλά ας μην μιλήσουμε για αυτά μέρα που είναι!
Σκοπός μας είναι να βοηθήσουμε το κοινό να καταλάβει πώς όλοι και όλες μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε με απλό τρόπο συνήθειες, απόψεις και να σπάσουμε τα κουτάκια που περιορίζουν τα άτομα και που δημιουργούν άνισες δομές και λιγότερες ευκαιρίες για εμάς.
Μετά από ένα χρόνο ίδρυσης, είδαμε, ακούσαμε, επροβληματιστήκαμε. Κατα καιρούς ελαμβάναμε ιστορίες από εμπειρίες που ήθελε ο κόσμος να μοιραστεί μαζί μας. Μια ανάγκη που οι αναρτήσεις μας πυροδοτούν αφού ο κόσμος αναγνωρίζει μια παρόμοια εμπειρία με την οποία ταυτίζεται. Το να συνειδητοποιείς, εκ των υστέρων, ότι η το Θκυό Λόγια έχει γίνει η φωνή πολλών ανθρώπων είναι μεγάλο ευτύχημα. Εφημερίδες και άλλα μέσα έχουν συντελέσει και έχουν γίνει μικρόφωνο για να ακουστεί η φωνή μας ακόμα πιο δυνατά.
Μετά από ένα χρόνο ναι, μπορούμε να πούμε περήφανα πως το Θκυό Λόγια φέρνει την αλλαγή, έστω και με μικρά βήματα, έστω και με ένα άτομο την φορά. Για εμας αυτό είναι το σημαντικό. Για εμάς, περηφάνια είναι να ξέρουν το Θκυό λόγια και να καταλαβαίνουν τι λέει, για τι θέματα μιλά και όχι να ξέρουν τα ονόματα μας και ποιες είμαστε. Ο μόνος λόγος που βάλουμε τζαμε έξω εμας είναι επειδή είμαστε 4 νέες με όραμα τζιαι θέληση για ένα αύριο χωρίς ανισότητες. Ίσως άλλοι νέοι και νέες να ακολουθήσουν το δρόμο, να βρουν τη θέληση και τις ιδέες για το ίδιο σκοπό. Για εμάς περηφάνεια είναι ο κόσμος της κυπριακή κοινότητας και μη να γίνει μέρος στο αγώνα της ισότητας. Στον αγώνα που στόχο έχει μια κοινωνία απελευθερωμένη από κάθε διάκριση.
Άρα ναι, για εμάς τούτη η πρωτοβουλία σημαίνει πολλά. Τα μηνύματα που παίρνουμε που τον κόσμο καθημερινά κάμνουν μας να συνειδητοποιούμε πόσο σημαντικός εν τούτος ο αγώνας τζιαι πόσον ακόμα πρέπει να παλέψουμε, εμείς, το Θκυό Λόγια, ο κάθε ένας τζιαι η κάθε μια που εμάς, για μια κοινωνία δίκαιη τζιαι ίση για τον κάθε άνθρωπο. Μια κοινωνία που δεν θα ξέρει από στερεότυπα και διακρίσεις. Τούτη την κοινωνία οραματίζεται το Θκυό Λόγια τζιαι ευχόμαστε τούτη η μέρα να γίνει η αρχή για να ευαισθητοποιηθεί περισσότερο κόσμο τζιαι να δράσει για την εξαφάνιση κάθε είδους έμφυλης διάκρισης.
